The name La Siembra means 'sowing' or 'planting time’ in Spanish. It is also a symbol for the seeds of change that our co-operative is sowing through its Fair Trade, educational and co-operative activities.
La Siembra Co-operative has chosen to identify with their producer partners by adopting the same democratic, participatory and transparent model that they follow in their own co-operatives. La Siembra is a worker co-operative, which means that employees are also members-owners of the co-op and participate democratically in the operation of the company. Membership is open and voluntary and requires that workers (a) invest in the co-op financially and (b) participate in its governance. Member-owners each have a vote in member meetings, are entitled to run for board elections and have the opportunity to participate in key organizational decisions.
The worker co-op model is an essential and effective element of a sustainable economy, This model also demonstrates that equitable business practices can help to build better communities for producers and consumers alike.
La Siembra works closely with their cocoa and sugar producer partners to ensure respect and fairness in the supply chain from farmers to consumers, from the ingredients to the final products. La Siembra takes the time to visit the farms and speak with the workers to learn more about their challengers and successes. The visits help in learning about what improvements can be made in the future such as:
- Providing support for new initiatives and advance credit to producers for pre-harvest financing.
- Working in solidarity with Dominican cocoa farmers to protest the Dominican government’s unfair cocoa tax. We were able to distribute information to both the Dominican Embassy in Canada and the Canadian Embassy in the Dominican Republic.
La Siembra sources their cocoa and sugar ingredients for all of the Cocoa Camino products from five producer co-operatives in four countries. The cocoa comes from co-ops in the Dominican Republic and Peru, while the sugar is sourced from co-operatives in Paraguay and Costa Rica.
La Siembra Co-operative is a member of the Ontario Worker Co-op Federation (OWCF), On Co-op, The Canadian Worker Co-op Federation (CWCF) and the Conseil de la coopération de l’Ontario (CCO). Co-operative trade relations account for more than 70% of our purchases and close to 50% of our total sales.
From producers to final product, La Siembra is committed to high environmental standards that minimize the impact of our products and activities on the environment:
- All of their ingredients are organic
- The retail product packaging is made from recycled material
- Their chocolate bars are packaged in polypropylene inner wrappers that are produced using significantly less non-renewable resources than traditional aluminum wrappers.
- Marketing materials are printed with vegetable-based inks on acid-free paper.
- They recycled products wherever possible, including recycled promotional materials, packaging and office supplies
In 2006, La Siembra Co-operative achieved nearly $4 million in sales. They now have twenty dedicated full-time employees in Operations, Finance, New Product Development, Sales, Marketing, Communications & Human Resources. |
