Lolita is an orca (killer whale) who performs at a Miami marine park. She was born in 1966, and she has been a slave to entertainment since 1970. This 2003 documentary is about her, the industry that seeks to profit from her, and the activists who seek to free her. Lolita is the only remaining survivor among the six members of her family that were all caught in 1970. Archival footage shows us how that catch took place. We are also shown Lolita's life today, her enclosure, and the run-down nature of the marine park that keeps her. Experts in this film help us gain an understanding of orcas' behavioural needs, and how they are not met in captivity. Unfortunately, Lolita is worth millions of dollars to the marine park, and her chances of ever seeing freedom again are slim. This hasn't stopped activists from advocating her liberation. From interviews with a former dolphin trainer, marine mammal specialists, animal rights activists, a former whale hunter, and others, we learn that the opposition to keeping marine animals in captivity is a multifaceted movement. While this story is about Lolita, it is also about all animals in captivity. By learning about their stories and unique needs, we become better able to advocate on their behalf. This documentary is a must see for every person who cares about animals. It runs for 58 minutes.
